Make Our Planet Great Again: funding programmes for foreign students and researchers

"Make Our Planet Great Again" Financements de recherche
As part of the Make Our Planet Great Again initiative, four new funding schemes are being implemented for international students and scientists working on the topics of climate change and sustainability, the energy transition and Earth systems.

Following the United States’ decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, on 1 June 2017 French President Emmanuel Macron launched an appeal to scientists, students, entrepreneurs, NGOs and the whole of civil society to mobilize and join France in leading the fight against global warming.

18 researchers have been selected by the Make Our Planet Great Again initiative. Some of these researchers will conduct their projects at Université Paris-Saclay member institutions.

New programmes for foreign students and researchers have been added to boost the initiative’s capacity on the topics of climate change and sustainability, the energy transition and Earth systems.

New funding schemes for research

Four schemes are open for master’s study, PhDs, post-doctorate fellowships and short research stays:

Joint funding of three-year contracts for PhD students

€50,000 in co-funding is offered to French institutions wishing to host a PhD student for three years for research on one of the Make Our Planet Great Again topics.

Participating institutions undertake to contribute a minimum of €50,000 over three years to co-finance the PhD student. Institutions apply first by proposing a PhD subject. Successful institutions then recruit the PhD students.

Joint funding of post-doctoral contracts

This co-funding scheme for up to €50,000 is offered to French higher education and research institutions wishing to host a postdoctoral fellow over a period of 12 to 24 months for research on the Make Our Planet Great Again topics.

Participating institutions undertake to fund 50% of the postdoctoral fellowship. Postdoctoral candidates submit their application in conjunction with the host institution, which provides a letter of commitment for the joint funding.

Funding of short research stays

The funding is for short stays (two weeks to five months) at French institutions for researchers (doctoral students, post-docs, senior researchers) wishing to work in a French research laboratory from August 2018 on the Make Our Planet Great Again topics.

The researchers will receive their mobility grant during the stay in France as a per-diem (€65 to €120/day).

Candidates submit their application with a letter of commitment from the French institution.

Master’s excellence scholarships

Master’s excellence scholarships (€1060/month) are offered for 12 to 24 months for students wishing to complete a programme related to a Make Our Planet Great Again topic at a French institution.

Candidates for this excellence scholarship submit their application with a letter of acceptance to the master’s programme (first or second year).

Paris Agreement on climate change

The Paris Agreement is the first ever universal agreement on climate change. It was established following negotiations at the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

All 195 delegations approved the agreement on 12 December 2015 and it entered into force on 4 November 2016.
